Beneagles – Peter Thomson Blend is a blended Scotch whisky with a rich history and strong traditional character:
🏴 History & Origin
Peter Thomson, from Perth, Scotland, started his business with a grocery store in 1908 and later developed a whisky brand under his name. In 1922, the Beneagles brand was born, inspired by the nearby luxury Gleneagles Hotel.
By the 1970s, Beneagles became one of the top 12 best-selling whiskies in Scotland thanks to its consistent quality and unique packaging design.
🥃 Brand & Style
Beneagles is a blended Scotch whisky with a higher-than-average proportion of Speyside malts for its time. Its distinctive flavor features creamy vanilla, a smooth texture, and a finish with subtle smoke or iodine-salty notes from Islay.
🏺 Collectible Design
Beneagles is famous for its collectible ceramic bottles made by Beswick and Wade, shaped like hunting animals such as eagles, owls, swans, and even Loch Ness monsters or the “Thistle & Rose” chess set with historical figures—each intricately painted and containing whisky inside.
These bottles were once gifted to first-class passengers of British Caledonian and are now highly valuable collectors’ items.
🏛️ Operation & Current Status
Peter Thomson (Perth) Limited operated until 1983 before selling to the Stakis Group, going through several ownership changes until Whyte & Mackay discontinued the Beneagles brand in 1993.
Since 2017, Macgregor Thomson Whiskies (descendants of the Thomson family) have re-registered the brand, managing old Beneagles whisky casks and launching the Finn Thomson Whisky range—including rare single cask releases like the 50-year-old Glenlivet debuted in 2022.
