Becherovka
A traditional herbal liqueur produced in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic, since 1807.
Its unique flavor comes from a secret recipe blending over 20 herbs and spices (including cinnamon, cloves, and bitter orange peel), using the pure spring water of the Karlovy Vary region.
Flavor & Ingredients
Alcohol content: 38% ABV (76 proof)
Tasting notes: Pronounced aromas of cinnamon, cloves, and orange; initial bitterness followed by a gentle sweetness and warm herbal finish.
Tradition & Brand
Created by Josef Vitus Becher and developed further under Johann Nepomuk Becher in the early 19th century.
The signature flat green bottle design was introduced in 1866 and remains unchanged today.
Currently owned by Pernod Ricard (or possibly another corporation according to the latest reports), with the recipe known only by two people and made in a secret room at the distillery.
How to Enjoy
Typically served chilled neat, preferably in a pre-frozen glass to fully appreciate the flavor.
Also popular as a cocktail ingredient, especially in the Beton (Becherovka + tonic water + lemon), a favorite drink in the Czech Republic.
